Welcome to our History Page
Our firm began when the founder began practicing law in 2002. It was originally the law office of Michael C. Williams, a sole proprietorship. Mr. Williams began as a Denver business lawyer practicing in the field of business transactional law, using his experience in the import export business through the 1990's as a basis for understanding and satisfying the needs of small business clients. He is a businessman and understands what businesses want and need when it comes to an attorney.
The firm transitioned into an LLC in 2005 and began expanding its reach in markets such as California and New York, where the firm opened pilot operations, staffed with local part-time 1099 attorneys and local Colorado lawyers with licenses to practice in other jurisdictions. The firm briefly opened offices in Fort Collins, CO and Boulder, CO, but closed these after clients expressed the preference of simply driving to the headquarters office in Denver.
Formalizing California operations required establishment of a professional corporation, since LLC's cannot practice law in California. Thus, M. C. Williams & Associates, PC was formed as a sister company. In 2008, Mr. Williams commenced operations in Washington State, through Regus' office location in downtown Seattle. Mr. Paul McVicar became the local in-state attorney handling much of the firm's work there. By 2009, Mr. Williams himself became a licensed Washington State attorney.
In 2008, the LLC was merged into the PC, which shortened its name to Williams Law, P.C. This streamlined certain tax filings and eliminated the need for twin sets of various vendor agreements for the firms. It also answered some State regulatory differentials relating to the prohibitions of advertising under multiple firm names, and differing State definitions of the term Associates. The reformulation into Williams Law, P.C. has also streamlined and reduced billing confusion for clients hiring the firm for multiple jurisdictional work.
In New York, the firm first operated out of the venerable old building at 48 Wall St., but finding service at the H.Q. Global facility there lacking, and disliking the onerous security procedures required by the lobby guards following the 9/11 attacks, the firm moved its address to the midtown address at 405 Lexington, the Chrysler Building. By 2010, this location had been little used, if at all, by the local New York 1099 attorneys hired to assist with local Manhattan matters, who preferred to meet clients at their own facilities throughout the city. Accordingly, Williams Law, P.C.'s New York office was moved to the apartment Mr. Williams uses in the upper East Side, in the Carlyle. Accordingly, it is now technically a home office. The head New York licensed attorney continues to be Mr. David Savidge, Esq., manager of the Colorado Headquarters office, who also maintains licensure in California and Colorado.
California operations were commenced at the wonderful 499 Canon facility in Beverly Hills, as early as 2005. Principally used by Mr. Williams when in town, this executive suite configuration with onsite parking and a Japanese garden on the roof was a favorite among the facilities used by the firm. The Canon facility was kept for most of the following four years, until clients and local attorneys alike indicated that the vast distances between Orange County, Riverside, and the Valley made the location inconvenient, whereupon the firm closed it and reverted to transient use of the Regus facilities throughout the L.A. basin area. Los Angeles matters have often been handled by our local 1099 attorneys or by Mr. Savidge, directly from our Denver Headquarters.
